In 1989 Jon Anderson left Yes and began working with fellow ex-Yesmates Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Bill Bruford. They recorded an album and in an effort to market it failed both in the attempt to appropriate the name 'Yes' ( a settlement was reached with the official Yes) and in album sales. With the recording of their second album almost complete Clive Davis, president of Arista (AMWH’s label) gave Trevor a call. Clive told Trevor that the new ABWH didn’t have any singles and asked him if he might have any songs that would work. Trevor submitted three demos to Arista and asked them to pick one; instead, Arista said it liked all three songs, and this began the embryonic stages of how Union became a Yes album. Or at least a record company ploy to boost sales of an album. Outside of writing “Miracle of Life”, “Lift Me Up” and “Saving My Heart” Trevor had nothing to do with the album. Actually the album’s title is very ironic as all eight members never played together on the album.

“It’s not that the Union album had anything to do with coming together . . . it was a business transaction. The first time I met Bill or Rick was at the Union (tour) rehearsel. The Union tour by far was better than the album.” In fact meeting and working with Rick, who wryly dubbed this project “Onion”, was the highlight for Trevor.
